About the technology
Trapping air and body heat within high-loft clusters, down is light, compressible and provides warmth in cold conditions.
Contrary to popular belief, down is not the same as feathers. Down fill insulation is made from goose or duck plumage – the lofty, fluffy stuff underneath the feathers.
The fill power of down indicates two important features: warmth-to-weight ratio and compressibility, both critical to retain warmth and furnish comfort.
Down products with a high fill power are usually lighter, less bulky and more compressible than some with a low fill power that is equally warm.
Down works best in dry conditions and doesn't perform when wet—machine drying brings natural down back to life.
Using only the highest quality down in all of our products, The North Face® tests each lot of down for loftiness, moisture resistance and ability to regain loft after compression.

Responsible Down Standard
The North Face is committed to improving animal welfare and traceability in our goose-down and feather supply chain.
In 2014 we launched the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) in partnership with Textile Exchange, a global non-profit dedicated to sustainability in the apparel and textile industry, and Control Union Certifications, an accredited third-party certification body.
The RDS certifies down against animal welfare requirements and tracks it from the source to the final product. All of the down we use is either RDS-certified or recycled.

The insulating layer is worn underneath a hard or soft shell in wet weather. In cold but dry conditions, it can be worn without a weather-protecting shell.
