When choosing a tent, first consider the number and types of people you will be camping with. The capacity of a tent gives you a good sense of whether it will hold 1, 2, up to 6 or even 8 people, but will it hold them comfortably? What if you plan to bring along a dog? Or air mattresses? Opt for a larger capacity if you want a little extra room.
Next, consider what season you will be camping in typically. A 3 season or 4 season tent will offer more versatility for changing weather conditions. Side vents are key for allowing airflow on hot days and long trips. Don't forget that the tent only provides so much protection from the weather. A warm sleeping bag is essential for staying warm inside the tent if you plan to camp in colder climates or seasons.
Finally, consider the material. Look for durable materials like ripstop nylon and aluminum poles. If weight is important, pay attention to the specs for each tent.
Our tents are thoughtfully designed with features to help make your next camping adventure a better experience. Several tents offer reflective guylines to help protect against high winds. Some of our freestanding tents even offer extra living or storage space in a vestibule area with easy-open back exits and dividers to offer quick accessibility to the outside. We've even thought about storage. Many of our tents offer attachment points to hang lamps, clothes, and gear.
Don't miss our Wawona collection which are more than just tents. They are full camping systems designed to help you and your family get outside and enjoy nature. The systems include tents, blankets, beds, and even our new hammock which can be mixed and matched for the perfect outdoor experience whether you're in your backyard or out in the wilderness.
Several of our tents are rated for very cold camping, but how to stay warm camping in a tent can still take preparation. You want insulation that will trap as much air as possible in the tent. You can use insulation on the outside or inside of the tent. Foam is great for insulating the floor (remember to go a little ways up the walls as well). And finally, insulate yourself! Get a cold-weather sleeping bag, pack a super-warm fleece, and don't sleep on a raised camp bed.
The North Face athletes Jim Zellers and Alex Honnold recommend focusing on two aspects of camping: sleeping and cooking. Remember to bring the things you need to cook, like a camp stove, as well as plates, cups, and utensils. If you're car camping and driving right up to your campsite, a larger tent can make all the difference.
There are a variety of camping tents available online and in stores. Use our Store Locator to find a location near you or shop right here online.
Super soft sleeping bags are a great way to make camping comfy. If you're driving or you don't mind the extra weight, sleeping pads or an air mattress can make a world of difference. If it's going to be cold, make sure to bring the right clothes and an extra blanket!
